Maui

Over spring break we went to Maui. My parents met us there. To make a long story short, we had an amazing time. How could you not if you're coming from a cold, dark place like AK.

Here are some highlights. Beware: lots of pictures ahead.

Family Shots:Very windy. At the blow hole off the Honoapiilani Hwy. We drove all away around it. Exciting narrow and curvy road. Levi threw up. He must get that from me.

On my b-day, Jeff and I went out to dinner at Cheeseburger in Paradise alone. Awesome b-day...Beach in the morning, mom took me out shopping and to lunch, and Jeff and I walked around Lahaina. I recommend the fudge place besides the cheeseburger restaurant we ate at.
Levi celebrated his 2nd b-day a few days before mine. Here's a shot of us right before we ate our cake pops. Levi loved being sang too.

Paddle Boarding:
We rented a paddle board for the week. We loved it! Jeff went surfing just about every morning (really early) and night. The kids loved getting rides on it. I surfed and actually caught some waves too; not as many as Jeff.

Sydney and Jordyn liked to snorkel in the pool just as much as the ocean.
I know, doesn't look that excited about it. She came out of the water freezing.

Such a great trip. In the mornings we go to the beach, come home for lunch, then go to the pool while levi took a nap in the condo, at night go back to the beach or sightseeing, playing UNO and then crashing pretty early.

Want to do in the future: Molokini boat and snorkel, Jeff would like to spear fish, try the surf tank thing, stay a night in Hana, Grand Wailea pools.

Fur Rondy

The Fur Rondy Festival is a 77 year tradition. It is a significant part of the history and tradition of Anchorage. In the mid 1930's, Anchorage was just a small town of about 3,000 people.

Vern Johnson, the father of the Fur Rendezvous, was a likeable, outgoing Anchorage citizen with a keen understanding of social conditions. He and his friends decided to establish a 3-day Festival to coincide with the time that the miners and trappers came to town with their winter's yield. It began as a three-day sports tournament on February 15, 16 and 17, 1935 and featured skiing, hockey, basketball, boxing and a children's sled dog race down Fourth Avenue. Nearly the entire population of Anchorage turned out for the bonfire and torchlight parade.
Since then, the Fur Rendezvous has earned national and international notoriety, and visitors from throughout the world descend on Anchorage every February. Fur Rendezvous remains a highly anticipated time of year.

This is the first year we've been and participated. We LOVED it! We did and saw many things.

1. SLED DOG RACE

The World Championship Sled Dog Race debuted in 1946 and has become the cornerstone event of the Festival bringing teams of sled dogs and mushers to Anchorage from across Alaska and all over the world. The World Championship Dog Weight Pull began in 1967 as a bet between two dog owners to see whose animal could pull the most weight. Four decades later, dog owners are still competing against each other for the cash, notoriety and the illustrious World Champion title for the event.

To kick off the beginning of the Iditarod, the mushers and dogs race around Anchorage. The race really starts in Willow, AK. What is the Iditarod? It is an annual 975 mile sled dograce run in early March from Willow to Nome. Mushers and a team of 12-16 dogs, of which at least 6 must be on the towline at the finish line, cover the distance in 9–15 days. The Iditarod began in 1973 as an event to test the best sled dog mushers and teams but evolved into today's highly competitive race. The current fastest winning time record was set in 2011 by John Baker with a time of 8 days, 19 hours, 46 minutes, and 39 seconds.

We saw about 5-6 sled dog teams.

2. CARNIVAL

They have a big carnival. Let me clarify, it's big for AK. It's not the OC Fair or anything.
We did not go on the rides. It was snowy and windy. Doesn't seem fun to twirl around on a ride when it's already freezing out.
3. FUR AUCTION

There are still many Fur Rendezvous events that have withstood the test of time and continue to maintain their unique character. The Official Rondy Fur Auction has been a staple of the Festival since the beginning and the Festival was named in large part to the economic importance of the Alaskan fur trade. Given that the fur trade was Alaska's third most valuable industry in those days, incorporating the industry into the celebration was a logical idea.

True Alaskans, or maybe just wanna-be-s. My snow pants, jacket, and boots keep me plenty warm. It looks pretty cool though.

4. BLANKET TOSS

The Blanket Toss, an ancient Native Alaskan tradition, joined the Festival in 1950. Native Alaskans were flown into Anchorage from Nome and the Little Diomede Islands to participate in the Blanket Toss and to showcase their captivating tribal dances. 
The "blanket" is made from walrus and breaded seal, at least that's what the guy told me. If you're native Alaskan you can kill any animal. They do use everything for something, like this.
So fun. I wish I could've done it too. I'm glad the girls got a chance.

5. RUNNING OF THE REINDEER

This year was the 5th Annual Rondy Running of the Reindeer! This internationally acclaimed event is a fundraiser for Toys for Tots and is a great way to help Alaskans! We ran 4 blocks in the middle of the street and 8 reindeer chased and passed us.

This was a highlight. I went with my friend, Kirsten. We were in the women's heat. We stayed toward the back of the group to try and get better pictures w/ the reindeers running behind us. The crowd watching was CRAZY. Thousands of people lined the streets. People on second story bldgs taking pictures and waving, people yelling, all sorts of participants dressed up. It was such a fun environment to be part of. I've never been to mardi gras, but that's how I would've pictured it--minus the snow and cold. It was difficult for Jeff to take pictures or video because not only did he have 3 busy little ones to keep an eye on, but the mass of humanity was nothing we've ever seen.
You can't see me, but it's just a picture to see the tons of people. This just shows a glimpse of it. We didn't even get a picture of us w/ reindeers behind us, but trust me there were. There was one reindeer slacking behind and came right past us.
After the race. We went with a St. Patrick's day theme-clover socks, green shirts, necklaces, and leprechaun silly hats.
6. SNOW SCULPTURES

This is also a huge activity/competition they have. It stays up for a long time. The kids enjoyed playing around all the sculptures that were made.

7. UAA HOCKEY GAME

As if our day wasn't busy enough we fit in a hockey game. We love going to these games. Our friend hooked us up with tickets.
When Jordyn saw the mascot, the sea wolf, she said, "I'm gonna give the monster a hug."
Between the periods the girls were thrown a Sea Wolf T-shirt and each got a water bottle and puck. I love having kids, they get all the cool stuff. If Jeff and I had been to the game alone, they wouldn't have thrown us that stuff.

Christmas was wonderful. We were busy....a huge party at our house, caroling at the children's hospital, the reindeer farm, swimming, sledding, christmas eve dinner at our house and Christmas day of course. We had such a great holiday. You loved having dad home and not working. You quickly became his shadow and wanted to be by his side every second. He loved it. I'm glad you guys have each other to wrestle around with when the girls are busy playing with barbies and make-up. You also love sledding. You'll go by yourself too. You willingly bring us your snow suit and boots to dress you because you love to play in the snow. Lately you've been galloping around the house wherever you go. It's hilarious and oh, so cute. You definitely love to wrestle, swing on the swing in the basement, and have your sisters chase you around the house. Your laugh and giggles make us smile. You fold your arms to pray and try your best to repeat what we tell you to say. Sometimes you're even more reverent than your sisters during prayers.
Yesterday we were heading into a store, I was holding you to the store, as I usually do, and out of nowhere you said loudly, "WALK." That was the first time I heard you say that word. You usually communicate with us by grunting, but your language is growing. So, I let you down and then you leisurely walked and picked up snow on the way to the store. Needless to say, it took a lot longer to get inside the store than previously holding you.
This week you've suffered with some constipation, a fungal rash on your lower abdomen, and horribly dry, cracked skin on the bottom of your big toe. I pray your toe heals quickly; that's bugging you the most. Your not constipated anymore and the rash doesn't hurt. I officially put away the booster seat chair thingy you use at the dinner table to eat. You refuse eating at it and only want to eat on the big chairs everyone else uses. You drink of a cup at the meal times and sippy cups other times. I stop using bottles when you and the girls were 11-12 months. Church is now at 9am. I love having 9 am church now. It's perfect and doesn't interfere with your naps. Love it and we love you!

11.16.11

I haven't written about you in awhile. There's much to catch up on. You love the music class we go to on Monday mornings. You like playing with an instrument, you sit down when they read a story, and participate as best you can. On fridays we go to reading time at the library. This is more difficult. You sit for one story and then you walk around or play on the chairs for 4 more stories. A few months ago you started jumping with both feet leaving the ground and now you jump off everything. You love eating your gummy vitamins. You still take one long nap during the day. Dad just cut your hair last night. I love it short. You look adorable. Many people stop me when I'm at a store. Their comments are one of two things that you are cute or a busy boy. Both are true and accurate. You seem to enjoy nursery i.e. they never come to get me or dad. I am looking forward to January when church starts at 9am and you're nap time is not affected. We've been sledding and playing in the snow now that it's been snowing a lot. You love to play in it and have us pull you on the sled. I've been flushing your pooh down the toilet in hopes that you begin to understand the concept of going to the bathroom. You love to flush the toilet and receive your "high five." Then you shut the lid, and run to the diaper genie to throw the diaper away. You still love to read books and insist on sitting on our lap to read. If Jordyn or Sydney are on my lap you push them off so you can sit on my lap. We love you Levi!

Halloween 2011

This was our first Halloween experiencing snowfall. After the trunk or treat at church, we went around our neighborhood with some friends. We walked around for 20-30 minutes before going home to drink some hot chocolate. Next thing I knew it was snowing. It didn't stop anyone because there were still tons of kids walking around until about 8:45. Another first was making a "halloween" dinner. It was easy and you loved it so I think a new tradition was born. Here are some mummy dogs.

My friend Carrie took pictures of you and our family. You are the cutest 1 year old boy I've ever seen.
Love kissing this boy and can't stop staring at him. Every feature (lips, cheeks, nose) are to die for.

8.23.11

I remembered a few more things about you that I had forgotten about. You usually wake up in the morning or afternoon nap crying. When you see sunlight right after you wake up, you always sneeze. You also love to get gently tickled. You usually pick up my hand and place it on your desired tickle spot, usually your tummy or arms. I think I can officially declare that you only take 1 nap now. Sundays are difficult. Church is from 1-4. On a typical day you go down for a nap at noon. This Sunday you finally laid down on dad the 3rd hour for about 20 minutes and that was your nap.

8.17.11

A week ago you and your sisters went to the pediadontist. It was your first time. Since you're so wiggly she  checked inside your mouth to see how your teeth are growing in. They give the kids sunglasses to put on while their checking inside your mouth. You had the sunglasses on and I said "Levi, say COOL DUDE, " and you said it! You've been saying it ever since, when prompted. This past Sunday you and I went into nursery for 30 minutes so you can see how things are. You did great. I could've left you (actually the week before dad did leave you in there for an hour) and you would've been fine. We played with the toys for a little bit and I taught the class a lesson, about the sacrament and then the class had snacks. You've caught on to folding your arms when we pray. It's pretty cute. You're a good listener and follow directions well. You put things away when I ask you to or throw trash in the garbage when we ask you to. I hope you always want to obey us and Heavenly Father, because when we are obedient, we're happy. You are easy to put to bed. I lay you down in your crib and say good night. You roll over with "woobie" in hand and we don't hear from you until the morning. You love to dance. When you dance you walk around the room in circles. When the music stops, you let us know that you're unhappy about it. When the music starts up again, you go back to walking and bobbing your head up and down. You like to make us laugh by doing funny faces where you smile really, really big.  My favorite is when you give us kisses. You love when I chase you around the house. Your giggle is so cute. We love you!
